When I was 18 my friend Eric and I decided to build a car for the Seattle down hill coaster race. We spent hours on this contraption. The body was made from an old boiler tank. We had 2 soapbox derby wheels for the rear and 5″ plastic lawn mower wheels up front. Rickety steering was by rope, along with the almost non existant brake. The 2 handles on the side operated both. Thank god we put a roll bar in. (I rolled it twice.) We won one race, not because of my lightning speed, ( 3 mph because the front axle was shaking like a leaf) , but because the other guy went blazing down the hill only to crash into the bails of hay at the hairpin turn. It started raining the next race. No brakes. Race over. We sold it to some kids after the race for $10 cash just so we didn’t have to haul it home.
